The real David Brewster
Born in Harlem, New York, on June 3, 1988, David Lawrence Brewster Jr. is an American rapper and actor better known by his stage name Dave East. To finance himself and his music, East began rapping in 2010 and peddled drugs in Harlem. He has already released more than six mixtapes. His ninth mixtape, Black Rose, which was released in 2014, helped him achieve notoriety. Nas was drawn to it once it was released, and he eventually signed East to his record company, Mass Appeal Records, and ultimately, Def Jam Recordings.
East was selected to be a member of the XXL magazine’s 2016 Freshman Class. Kairi Chanel, his ninth mixtape, debuted at number 38 on the US Billboard 200 the same year it was published. With features from Nas, Wiz Khalifa, and Chris Brown, among others, his first Extended Play, Paranoia: A True Story, was published in 2017 and peaked at number 9 on the US Billboard 200.
In the 2017 films Being Mary Jane and The Breaks, where he played himself, East made his acting debut. He played “Mister Ford” in a supporting part in the 2019 Netflix movie Beats. He played Method Man in the Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga (2019), which served as his breakout performance. On November 8, 2019, he released his first studio album, Survival, which reached number 11 on the US Billboard 200.
