Author, lawyer, and diplomat Caroline Bouvier Kennedy was the American ambassador to Japan from 2013 to 2017. She is the child of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy and President John F. Kennedy.
Kennedy lived held in New York City on November 27, 1957. Caroline’s father became the president of the United States when she was three years old. When her father was killed on November 22, 1963, she was a few days shy of turning six. Kennedy graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1980 from Radcliffe College and a Juris Doctor in 1988 from Columbia Law School. She received a job as a research assistant at the Film and Television Division of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York after receiving her degree. Kennedy is the president of the Kennedy Library Foundation and has served on the boards of various charitable institutions.
Kennedy spoke at the 2000 Democratic National Convention and backed Al Gore in the presidential race of 2000. She spoke at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver and endorsed Democratic candidate Barack Obama for president in the presidential election of 2008. Kennedy initially expressed interest in filling Hillary Clinton’s vacated Senate seat after Clinton was confirmed as the nation’s secretary of state, but she later withdrew her name from consideration due to personal matters. Kennedy was selected by President Obama to serve as the American ambassador to Japan in 2013. Shortly before Donald Trump was sworn in as president of the United States, Kennedy announced his resignation as ambassador to Japan. On January 18, 2017, she formally resigned as ambassador to Japan.
