Early Life
Pedro Rivera and Rosa Saavedra, Rivera’s parents, learned they were expecting while attempting an illegal border crossing from Mexico to the United States. Their daughter Jenni was christened Dolores Janney Rivera Saavedra when she was born on July 2, 1969, in Los Angeles.
Teen Mom

After reconciling with her parents, Rivera eventually filed for divorce from her spouse and started working for her father’s record label, Cintas Acuario. There, singing became her new dream.

The aspiring performer met Juan López by giving club performances. Soon after their marriage in 1997, López was sentenced to six months in prison for trafficking illegal immigrants. After his detention, the couple gave birth to two children. But López’s adultery caused the pair to split up in 2003. While her marriage was in trouble, Rivera’s music was on the rise. She joined the Fonovisa record label, and “Que Me Entierren con la Banda,” her first single, was a hit. Soon, Rivera’s fast-growing fan following started referring to her as “La Diva de la Banda.”
Family Scandals
Rivera’s time in the spotlight was cut short when she discovered that her ex-husband had abused her daughters and sister. Before being found guilty in 2006 and receiving a 30-year prison sentence, he managed to avoid capture for nine years. Then, in 2009, her second spouse died in prison after receiving a 10-year sentence for drug trafficking. Despite these horrific events, Rivera kept putting out successful albums and getting nominated for Billboard and Latin Grammy awards.

Rivera’s decision to switch from music to charity work was inspired by her terrible past. In 2010, she was chosen to serve as the spokesperson for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
