Jenni Rivera is best known for her popular Spanish-language albums and the reality TV programs she has created that include her family.

Who Was Jenni Rivera?

With songs like La Diva En Vivo, the Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera became well-known. Rivera has 15 records that are gold, platinum, or double platinum. The singer later became well-known for her work as a campaigner, businesswoman, and reality TV star. She tragically died in a plane crash on December 9, 2012, at the age of 43.

Early Life

Pedro Rivera and Rosa Saavedra, Rivera’s parents, learned they were expecting while attempting an illegal border crossing from Mexico to the United States. Their daughter Jenni was christened Dolores Janney Rivera Saavedra when she was born on July 2, 1969, in Los Angeles.

Teen Mom

Rivera’s early years weren’t easy. When she fell pregnant with Trino Marin at the age of 15, her parents forcibly removed her from their house. They had two additional children after she married Marin in 1984. Their eight years together, according to Rivera, were violent both physically and mentally. Their marriage was not enjoyable. She nevertheless completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees while pursuing a business degree. But her troubled marriage led to depression and two failed suicide attempts. After reconciling with her parents, Rivera eventually filed for divorce from her spouse and started working for her father’s record label, Cintas Acuario. There, singing became her new dream.

Making Music

The aspiring performer met Juan López by giving club performances. Soon after their marriage in 1997, López was sentenced to six months in prison for trafficking illegal immigrants. After his detention, the couple gave birth to two children. But López’s adultery caused the pair to split up in 2003. While her marriage was in trouble, Rivera’s music was on the rise. She joined the Fonovisa record label, and “Que Me Entierren con la Banda,” her first single, was a hit. Soon, Rivera’s fast-growing fan following started referring to her as “La Diva de la Banda.”

Family Scandals

Rivera’s time in the spotlight was cut short when she discovered that her ex-husband had abused her daughters and sister. Before being found guilty in 2006 and receiving a 30-year prison sentence, he managed to avoid capture for nine years. Then, in 2009, her second spouse died in prison after receiving a 10-year sentence for drug trafficking. Despite these horrific events, Rivera kept putting out successful albums and getting nominated for Billboard and Latin Grammy awards.

Three More Careers

Rivera’s decision to switch from music to charity work was inspired by her terrible past. In 2010, she was chosen to serve as the spokesperson for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. In addition, she founded the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation to aid immigrants, cancer patients, and traumatized women.

She married former baseball player Esteban Loaiza during this period, and she and her family appeared in various reality TV shows, including Jenni Rivera Presents: Chiquis & Raq-C (2010), I Love Jenni (2011), and Chiquis ‘n Control (2012). She launched Jenni Jeans, Divine Music, Divina Realty, Jenni Rivera Fragrance, and Divina Cosmetics in addition to acting in these well-liked shows.

Despite numerous professional achievements, Rivera filed for a second divorce while unsubstantiated rumors of an affair between Loaiza and the singer’s daughter Chiquis were making headlines. In a press conference on the breakup, Rivera stated, “I am a woman like any other woman, and ugly things happen to me like any other woman. The amount of times I’ve gotten back up equals the number of times I’ve fallen.

Death

In a tragic turn of events, the 43-year-old celebrity perished in a plane crash on December 9, 2012, immediately following that incident. She sold more than 15 million copies of her 12 major-label albums, but her music will live on as her legacy. Her family asked that her song “La Gran Senora” (The Great Lady) be recreated on Latin radio groups on the day of her funeral as a fitting honor.
